The 7th Vanport Mosaic Festival

Join us for in-person memory activism opportunities to REmember, REpair, REclaim. and RE-imagine our collective story.

2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the building of Vanport, once Oregon’s second largest city, and the largest WWII federal housing project in the United States.
At a time when exclusion and racial segregation were the norm, Vanport was a place of belonging.

Eighty years later, at a time when today's many crises have highlighted our community's continuing inequities, what can the history and living spirit of Vanport tell us today? Join us for arts performances, screenings, exhibits, tours, dialogues, gatherings and celebrations.

Flood refugees picket City HallJune 30, 1948

The Vanport Citizens’ Emergency Disaster Committee--formed by The Vanport Tenants’ League, Vanport College students and other activists--pressured the government for permanent housing and relief grants for flood losses. Victims never received monetary compensation nor an apology from any government agency. The Vanport Flood is considered Oregon’s Hurricane Katrina.
