Precipice: re-membering, forgetting and claiming home - a new solo play
conceived and performed by Damaris Webb
directed by Olivia Mathews
written by Chris Gonzalez
Saturday, May 25th at 7:30pm
Sunday, May 26th at 2:00pm
Historic Alberta House - 5131 NE 23rd Ave, Portland
Following Sunday's 2:00pm performance, please join us for writer/educator/organizer Bruce Poinsette's reflections on“My Heart Belongs Where the Trees Are,” his Oregon Humanities essay detailing a Black film crew’s road trip to the towns of Pendleton and Joseph to explore Black life in Eastern Oregon.
Precipice is a magical-realist, fluid poem that tenderly holds place, house/home and mementos as doorways to connection, while deeply questioning materialistic notions of ownership. This one-woman show presses against the boundaries of media reports, geological truths, legacy, DNA reports, and the value of listening to the land as a third-generation Black Portlander and Oregonian. Who owns your idea of belonging? What is the legacy of the place you call home? As far as you can tell, is everyone free?
Precipice was first developed under the 2024 IFCC Grant and Residency Program. This production is presented as part of the 2024 Vanport Mosaic Festival, and made possible by the generous support of Ronni Lacroute, Regional Arts and Culture Council, and Portland Events and Film.
