In 2019 The Vanport Mosaic hosted a series of story circles with former and current Black residents of Albina to explore the past, present and future of the historic NE Portland neighborhood.  The gatherings focused on intergenerational exchange, listening, restorative engagement, artful infusion and building deeper relationships.

The paintings on display were created as collaborations between visual artists Alex Chiu and Jamaali Roberts, and they were all painted live and spontaneously during the duration of the events. No further refinement was done outside of the storytelling gathering

These gatherings were part of Stories in Movement, an art-infused and story-centered process of discovery through memory activism and imagination co-created by Community Weaver Chisao Hata and Story Midwife Laura Lo Forti - supported by the Office of Community & Civic Life’s Constructing Civic Dialogues initiative and Oregon Cultural Trust.

Our gratitude to all who offered their memories, visions, trauma, loss, and joy as part of the circles.

Special thanks to Sunshine Dixon, Elise Cawthorne, Shei'meka Owen, Donovan Smith, and Darrell Grant.
